Interns at Palo Alto Company Palantir Earn $7,000 A Month

Interns often view their work as a frustrating yet necessary means to a decent paying job. But some of these eager college students may be looking at a paycheck bigger than most full-time workers.

A recent list released by employment site Glassdoor.com names the 25 highest-paying internships in the country. Palo Alto-based company Palantir is the clear leader when it comes to intern pay. Interns at this tech giant are paid $7,012 a month. That means an intern’s annual salary here would be around $84,000 if they worked year-round. That is almost 60 percent higher than the median U.S. household income.

It comes as no surprise that the tech sector dominates this list, with all but two companies (ExxonMobil and San Ramon-based Chevron) being technology based. Another thing to note: 18 of the 25 gigs are headquartered in the Bay Area.

Well-known companies Facebook, Twitter, Google and Apple all made the list’s Top 10, paying interns well over $5,500 a month. But there are also some lesser known – albeit wealthy – companies on the list. VMware in Palo Alto came in at No. 2 and Santa Clara’s Nvidia was twelfth.

The list is based on companies with at least 20 salary reports between January 2012 and January 2014.

Internships applications for the Summer 2014 terms are still being accepted at most of these companies.
