For the first time in 458 years, there's a free app for tracking a lunar eclipse. Oh, and for the first time in 458 years, the luncar eclipse coincides with the winter solstice.
That's some wicked Wiccan stuff.
The SkySafari Lite app, developed by Tim DeBenedictis of San Francisco, has already been downloaded more than 200,000 times.
"We're using this unique eclipse to share our latest astronomy apps with the public, and to spark an interest in astronomy for millions of people at the peak of the holiday season," said Southern Stars founder DeBenedictis. "It's an event we couldn't miss."
Well, in the Bay Area we may miss it because of the rains and cloud cover.
The eclipse does last for more than three hours -- and for 72 minutes the earth's shadow will hide the moon.
That's cool and all, but that's a long time to stare at the clouds -- standing in the rain -- and waiting for a glimpse of Goodnight Moon.
