Obama's First Tweet

No one else was doing it for him this time

President Barack Obama has finally done it. He officially became an active participant in the Twitter Nation, if only to push a button Monday to send out a tweet for the first time.

The President and the First Lady were visiting the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. at the time and decided to announce it to the Twittersphere, thanks in part to a regular tweeter at the organization.  The employee typed the message, and the president pushed a button to send it out to the masses.

Let the record show that the first official tweet sent by an American president was:

President Obama and the First Lady are here visiting our disaster operation center right now.

And there was much rejoicing at the Red Cross headquarters.  The tweet writer was ecstatic:

President Obama pushed the button on the last tweet. It was his first ever tweet!

In what may be a minor breach of Twittiquete, the President sent his second tweet a short time later when he hit send on ABC White House coorespondent Jake Tapper's re-tweet of the Red Cross's original message.

Of course, Obama is still using a ghostwriter for his Twitter account.
