Sochi Winter Olympics Torch in Space

The Soyuz spacecraft carrying the Olympic torch for the Sochi Winter Olympics is scheduled to take off tonight at around 7:15 p.m. PST.

Once on board the International Space Station, the torch will be taken on a spacewalk, Then it will be returned to earth.

The Olympic torch was flown into space in 1996 on the shuttle Atlantis for the Atlanta Summer Olympics, but it has never been taken outside a spacecraft.
