Square Reader Gets Thinner

Company claims it's more accurate, too

It's not just smartphones and tablets that are getting thinner and lighter.

The Square card reader, likely present in your favorite indie coffeeshop, is going through a transformation as well. It's getting thinner by 45 percent, and, according to the San Francisco company, it's getting more accurate as well.

Square, which recently moved into a huge new headquarters (and has been the subject of lots of future IPO buzz), is making the reader compatible with more devices, as more shops and cafes decide to use them.

If you ever get a chance to see Square's new HQ, you'll see a wall full of previous reader designs. This is the fourth iteration the public has been able to use. You may have to squint to see a difference (they're that small), but Square hopes it makes your next coffee purchase a little faster.
