Surf's Up: GoPro Ready To Show You Mavericks

Camera company taking off

You Can Get THIS Close to Mavericks Waves

Scott Budman explains how the company GoPro is playing a up close and personal role in this weekend's Mavericks surf contest. (Published Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013)

Mavericks is on. Great news for surfers, mixed news for people who love to watch surfing.

First, the rules: We the press are not allowed anywhere near the waves. This is because of big waves that swept in and threatened spectators last time around. So, how do we show you the action?

Say hello to my little friend.

The GoPro camera has already become ubiquitous at events like Mavericks, and pretty much on top of surfboards (and handgliders, and helmets, and mountain bikes) everywhere. They're small, super durable, and stream the kind of video that makes your jaw drop.

Surfs Up! Mavericks Will Be Held Sunday

[BAY] Surfs Up! Mavericks Will Be Held Sunday
Mavericks surf contest will be held on Sunday. For the first time in two years, 24 big wave surfers will head to Half Moon Bay. Jean Elle reports.

This year, GoPro will not only take you to the Maverick waves with their cameras, it's also putting its money where its heart is, sponsoring the event.  GoPro recently got a 200 million dollar investment from Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn, valuing the camera company at a staggering $2.25 billion. So it's got a little cash to go along with those little cameras.

With everybody showing off everything these days, cameras are red-hot. GoPro has taken the lead when it comes to powerful cameras that can go just about anywhere; by giving us a front-row seat to one of the most photographed events anywhere, it shows no sign of giving up that lead.
