About 30 people left Filene's Basement on Connecticut Avenue at about 1 p.m. Saturday complaining of burning throats and eyes. DC firefighters responding to the scene evacuated the store.
At least five people will require medical treatment, authorities said.
Investigators are still working to determine the source of the irritation, which witnesses said may have been some sort of pepper spray.
