Go Gong-Wild: Enter Berkeley's “Hack the Bells” Competition

Go nuts with the UC Berkeley bell -- digitally, of course.

The bells of Sather Tower are at your disposal.

Artists of all media are called to the Campanile to participate in "the world's first remix competition for carillon" -- that is, bells, and specifically, the famous bells on UC Berkeley's campus.

It's "Hack the Bells," and there are few limits other than a competition entry deadline of Sept. 1.

The bells, called the Campanile, in Sather Tower -- you know the tower -- are turning 100 in the next academic year. To celebrate the centennial, the bells are being celebrated.

Audio samples from the bells themselves are available for mixing, remixing and arrangement. Literary types are encouraged to capture in words the meaning of sound. Visual artists are asked to put pigment to canvas or other media for the same purpose.

There's a $700 grand prize that comes along with an opportunity for UC Berkeley to acquire the work permanently, according to the contest website.
