Old Safe Found Dumped on Novato Street

It's not every day that an old Sentry safe falls out of the sky - or a getaway truck? - and lands on a city street in Marin County.

Well, that's what happened just after midnight Monday in Novato along Hamilton Drive, police said, when a security guard spotted a 24 x 30-inch safe on the road.

Novato Police Lt. Jennifer Welch, who acknowledged that by Monday afternoon police hadn't even looked inside the safe, said it's anyone's guess who owns the big, sturdy box.

"We're trying to figure out who it belongs to," she told NBC Bay Area. She said it doesn't appear as though it belongs to a bank, and provided two photographs of the safe, which appears to be at least 30 years old. The safe is battered and a battery wires are hanging loosely from a row of numbered buttons. There's a model number on the safe that reads A5865.

Oddly enough, this isn't the first time Novato police have been called to the scene of an abandoned safe.

"We've had a few," Welch said. "It's unusual, as we continue our investigation, we hope to identify the owner."

Anyone who has information about the safe is asked to call Novato police at 415-897-4361.
