New Limits for Yosemite's Half Dome

Fewer permits this year so getting to the top will be a little tougher.

Visiting one of the nation's most famous natural landmarks will now be a little tougher. Yosemite National Park officials say it will lower the number of daily permits it issues to Half Dome hikers.

This year it will issue 300 permits per day; 100 fewer than last year. Officials used a lottery system last year to distribute the permits. That will likely be used again this year.

Park officials say the change is to try and preserve the popular hiking trail. Too many hikers create congested and dangerous conditions, especially on the 400-foot ascent up the granite shoulder of the dome.

The "Half Dome Trail Stewardship Plan" was released Tuesday. It is open to public comment through March 15.
