Schools and Pink Slips

Teachers Take Hit for State's Flawed Budget

Throughout California, thousands of public school teachers are once again anxiously waiting to see if they'll get pink slips on March 15th. That's the deadline for districts to notify staff if there's a chance they'll lose their jobs.

Imagine what that does for morale.  It's not the teachers' fault.  It's our state government  - unable to plan a balanced budget. What other industry threatens its workforce with layoffs year after year?  Yet, we expect teachers to soldier on and keep mentoring and nurturing our kids?

Last March, twenty thousand California teachers and staffers were given layoff slips.  Even though eight thousand jobs were later saved, the emotional damage was done.

NBC Bay Area believes this has to stop.  Districts should only notify those employees they truly have to lay off.
