OAKLAND, Calif., Tuesday, April 30, 2019. Most of us think of rabbits as having the market cornered on reproduction, but cats really give them a run for their money. Kitten season is here with a vengeance.
“As of today, we have over 140 cats and kittens currently in foster homes,” says Joseph Romero, Foster and Medical Support Manager at the East Bay SPCA, “and 50 more in-house awaiting fosters.” And this is just the beginning.
The East Bay SPCA has been receiving kittens from the general public, and from other shelters who do not have foster programs able to handle the influx of so many kittens at once. With an ambitious goal set for a 100% save-rate, the East Bay SPCA is looking for additional foster families who would like to open their homes to nursing queens with kittens or kittens needing to be bottle-fed.
Cats can have up to five litters a year, and each litter may be up to six kittens. Once those kittens pass four or so months in age, they too can start breeding. “It is critically important for people to spay or neuter their pets. One female cat can have 30 kittens a year – and her kittens will start having kittens before the year is out” Romero says.
The East Bay SPCA Foster department will be holding a kitten bottle-baby training on Sunday, May 12, 2:00 p.m. at 8323 Baldwin St, Oakland. Please contact the department at (510) 563-4632 to sign up.
The East Bay SPCA is also accepting donations of small crates, kitten formula, cat litter, and wet kitten food. Monetary donations also are greatly appreciated.
