It’s winter break for many Bay Area schools and that means lots of families are in Tahoe. The fresh snow isn’t just good for skiers and snowboarders, our water supply depends on our Sierra snowpack. NBC Bay Area’s Raj Mathai spoke to Heather Segale of UC Davis and Mike Reitzell, president of Ski California, for some insight.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento tweeted Sunday that, despite California having a mostly dry January, snow depth and snow water content “is looking good and still running above average for this time of year.”

The recent storms dumped a good amount of snow in the mountains around Lake Tahoe. This is obviously fun for skiers, but what about the drought? NBC Bay Area’s Jessica Aguirre spoke to Dr. Andrew Schwartz, meteorologist with Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Lab, for some insight.

Research shows a new disturbing development when it comes to water supply in California; the snowpack in the Sierra has vanished. Back in April, the snowpack was 59% of average. But now, instead of feeding into rivers and flowing into reservoirs, it has melted into the ground.
