4/22: The Old and the New

Yuja Wang and James Moody

THE KID: It's not often that we push a pianist here but  then again it's not often that virtuoso pianist Yuja Wang comes to town. Or we can write virtuoso pianist. The 23-year-old pianist comes to the Herbst Theater, 401 Van Ness Ave. in San Francisco, tonight at 8 to play Schumann, Liszt, Scriabin and Prokofiev.

THE LEGEND: If James Moody had only worked with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, it would have been enough to make the man a legend for a lifetime. But he also played with Elvis and several other music legends. Tonight he was suppose to play Yoshi's, 510 Embarcadero W. in Oakland, at 8 to celebrate his 85 birthday but he is sick. But that won't stop the show. Other capable artists such as Frank Wess, Joey DeFrancesco, Nnenna Freelon, Randy Brecker, will step in to fill the void.
