American Idol, Afghanistan Style!

Plus, tell stories of indulgence and catch a dancepunk concert

AFGHANI IDOL: Many may frown upon American globalization, wincing at the thought of McDonald's in Paris and Starbucks in Tokyo, but Havana Marking's new documentary takes a look into one major positive effect. Afghan Star explores the Afghani version of American Idol, whose contestants span Afghanistan's many ethnic divisions and whose cell-phone voting system holds out a real promise of democracy. Catch it at the Red Vic Movie House tonight at 7:15 and 9:15 p.m.

FRIENDLY FIRES: Tonight at the Independent, hear the latest from Friendly Fires, a dancepunk band from across the pond. Their self-titled album includes infectious singles "Paris" and "Skeleton Boy". Listen to their post-punk trance tunes tonight at 9 p.m.

EAT UP AND DISH: Porch light brings together an eclectic mix of storytellers for evenings of entertainment and inspiration. As we approach the number one gorging holiday, Porch light is hosting an open door session with the theme of "gluttony". Indulge and divulge your ten minute story at Hemlock Tavern at 7 p.m. [7x7]
