We're praying San Francisco's "summer" will arrive soon. (Please!?) In that spirit, we've decided to forget the current temperature and instead start planning for sun, starting with this guide to the area's dog-friendly beaches. If you're with pup, give these a walk (check their websites for leash rules).
Kehoe Beach: The 0.6 mile trail to the beach is short enough that you can take your dog and kids without them complaining. The beautiful grassy hills, wildflowers, and mustard plants along the trail make the trip worth it. Bring your own food since there aren't many restaurants nearby. (Point Reyes National Seashore, Tomales Bay)
Baker Beach: The picnic areas and gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge are definite draws to many of the sun-bathers here. Warning: don't walk toward the north end unless you're prepared for nudity. (Gibson Road, San Francisco)
Limantour Beach: This wide beach is known for its tranquil atmosphere. Enjoy a quiet afternoon without crowds. Not to mention, the parking is free! (Point Reyes National Seashore, Point Reyes Station)
Fort Funston: The walk to this beach may be brutal, but there will be tons of dogs and their owners to keep you company. If you've got someone else to watch your pooch, try out hang-gliding or horseback riding here.(Skyline Boulevard, San Francisco)
Lands End: Come relax among the cypress trees. If for some reason you're unhappy with this rugged coast, you can walk to the other pocket beaches nearby. (El Camino del Mar, San Francisco)

Crissy Field: A SF favorite, this is a great place to enjoy a picnic while your dog frolics in the water (Note: In the Wildlife Protection Area at the west end of Crissy field beach, leashes are required all year except from May 15 to July 1). If your pup's a chiller, he can post while you legally fish without a license at Torpedo Wharf. And if it gets gets too cold, stroll into the Warming Hut for a cup of coffee. Ocean Beach: As we recently covered, dogs are allowed off-leash on Ocean Beach only in some areas. Even so, it's a great place to take a stroll and watch the surfers. (Point Lobos Avenue/Great Highway, San Francisco)
Seabright Beach: Bring some meat and veggies and grill over a bonfire. It's busy enough to be lively but not as crowded as Boardwalk. Plus, it's very close to eateries and downtown Santa Cruz. (East Cliff Drive at Seabright Avenue, Santa Cruz)
Doran Beach: Many choose to go crabbing on the boats here. It's relatively flat and a good spot for camping. Your dog can guard the tent. (201 Doran Beach Road, Bodega Bay)
Dillon Beach: Dillon's rolling hills, dunes and coves provide a secluded area for some grade A relaxing. Grab food at the beachside Dillon Beach Resort Cafe, and if you want to stay longer, look into renting a beach house.
