Drag Queens on Ice, Tonight

What would Brian Boitano do?

Move over Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano. When it comes to San Francisco's Union Square holiday skating rink, drag queens rule the ice.

Tonight, some of the Bay Area's most colorful drag personalities will lace up their figure skates and take to the ice in a theme night that is open to the public.

Attendees are encouraged to get in on the fabulous fun by donning wigs and skating alongside the performers during the special session, which is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Joel Kowalke, a publicist for the event, said this is the second year the skate rink management has sanctioned the skate-along, although in past years drag queens have shown up informally to liven up the ice.

"It's a great event, and the ice rink values the diversity of SF and wanted to mirror that appreciation for diversity," Kowalke said today.

This is the first year that the drag queen event will feature performances. According to Kowalke, organizers received feedback last year requesting shows.

Three members of the drag community--Mutha Chucka, Lil' Miss Hot Mess and Anna Conda will be featured in special performances at the session's end.

According to a Facebook page for the event, more than 100 people plan to attend.

Although it is unknown how many of those people will get in the drag queen spirit, Kowalke said that about 20 to 30 drag performers stopped by the rink at last year's inaugural event.
