Les Claypool raises a glass of his newest creation, Purple Pachyderm, a delicious 2007 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

Les Claypool typically spends evenings onstage rocking out with his band Primus, but he daylights in culinary circles with his Sebastopol-based winery Claypool Cellars. The legendary Bay Area bassist will be pouring bottles of his Russian River Valley wines at a special dinner in the Modernism West gallery at San Francisco's Foreign Cinema restaurant on August 23.

Foreign Cinema chefs Gayle Pirie and John Clark have crafted a five-course feast that includes dishes such as Oaxacan-style squid, duck mousse bruschetta and nectarines, tea-smoked five spice duck breast, and Mexican chocolate cake. Food will be paired with Claypool Cellars specials such as Purple Pachyderm and Pink Platypus, and the 1964 film Dr. Strangelove — Claypool's favorite — will screen during the meal.

Claypool has previously hosted dinners in the North Bay and is known for his whimsical approach to winemaking that even includes how his wine is served. Case in point: Claypool Cellars opened a wine tasting caboose in Sebastopol's Gravenstein Station in 2011.

The Foreign Cinema dinner costs $60; call (415) 648-7600 x 0 to make reservations.
