Lousy Weather is Good for Tahoe

Let it snow. Let it snow, in Tahoe.

This week's weather may be bad news for your outdoor plans here in the Bay Area, but it's good news for Tahoe ski resorts. People who have lived their entire life in the Sierra say they haven't seen this much snow in decades. Truckee is reporting three feet of snow (and it's still snowing) and Squaw says it has six feet in the upper mountain.  Swoosh!

Here in the Bay Area, we've already seen an onslaught of rain, hail, and even a rare thunderstorm. Now, get ready for a big chill. Despite some spots of sun to start the week, more rain is expected between now and Thanksgiving, with temperatures dipping down to the low 20s on the holiday.

It'll be a rough few days for drivers in San Francisco, but it's a bonanza for ski resorts.  Heavenly, Boreal, Northstar and Squaw are already open and Bear Valley and Alpine will be open by Friday.

Give yourself some extra time if you're flying or driving. The weather conditions will make for extremely hazardous roads, and SFO has already experienced some delays and the airport is ready to break out the deicing machines if needed.

It's a delicate time for San Francisco's Public Utilities Commission as well. These early-season storms are a test of the sewer system's health and well-being. Residents can prevent flooded intersections and backed-up pipes by sweeping debris such as leaf-litter away from grates the streets. If you spot a flooded sewer grate -- also known as a "catch basin" -- report it to the city by calling 311.
