SF is One of World's Most Stylish Cities

An international survey ranks San Francisco #9 on its list of stylish hotspots

When Bay Area residents think of stylish cities, they might not immediately consider their own San Francisco (disheveled hippies, anyone?). But that's not what the rest of the world thinks.

According to Forbes.com, a survey known as the Anholt-GfK Roper City Brands Index ranked San Francisco ninth on its list of the world's most stylish cities. Last year, the city didn't even crack the top 10.

It seems that the 2009 survey respondents were compelled by the Bay Area's product design prowess from companies like Apple, IDEO, and Frog Design. San Francisco's plethora of vintage and second-hand stores also contributed to the city's fashionable image.

The survey asked 10,000 people from 20 countries to rank 50 cities based on criteria such as restaurants, nightlife, climate, and physical attractiveness. The cities were also judged on lifestyle, buzz, multiculturalism, cultural life, and attractiveness.

Here's a list of the top 10:

1. Paris, France

2. Milan, Italy

3. New York City, USA

4. London, England

5. Rome, Italy

6. Los Angeles, USA

7. Tokyo, Japan

8. Madrid, Spain

9. San Francisco, USA

10. Barcelona, Spain
