Citizen Cake's Rebirth Nears

PACIFIC HEIGHTS—From the sounds of it, Elizabeth Falkner will soon be making Fillmore appearance outside of Peet’s, as her team gears up for a March 15 opening of Citizen Cake on Fillmore. They completely moved out of the Hayes Valley digs over the weekend and are currently waiting for the contractors to refurbish the new interior and for the usual final inspections to wrap up. According to the GM, not much reconfiguration needs to be done. Faulkner’s patisserie will be constructed by the doorway where Vivande previously had an area for retail items. [Eaterwire]

SOMA— Lady Hopstress tipped us off Radius, Kelly Hughett’s 30-seat locavore café may open on Friday, if final inspections go smoothly this week. Ingredients for items like a pork loin, cheese, and truffled egg sandwich will be sourced from withing 100-miles, allowing you to feel a-OK about consuming that much protein. [TH]

SOMA EXTRA—The formerly New York-based obsessive pizza guy, Anthony Mangieri, landed in SF permanently as of yesterday. According to this scoopy report from Grub Street, he should be opening Una Pizzeria Napoletana near the 11th Street corridor and Thad Vogler's much anticipated Bar Agricole by the end of May. Amidst the coming months’ impending pizza implosion, Mangieri’s joint promises to differentiate itself with a higher 20 dollar/pie price tag and quotable New Yorkish antics, “We have no quarrel with the man who sells cheaper pizza. He knows how much he’s worth!” [GrubStreet SF]

THE MISSION—Emerging from mini-hiatus tomorrow, Bi-Rite will be scooping from 11 a.m. onwards, but it’ll be a little different this time around due to much more seating. Before week's end, owners/pastry chefs Kris Hoogerhyde and Anne Walker hope to open their “carnival-style” window, from which they’ll be dispensing vanilla and chocolate Straus soft serve ice cream (the not low-fat kind), pre-packaged pints, and individual cookies, cupcakes, pies, and galettes from Bi-Rites bakery. They’ll be experimenting with their own soft serve flavors once they get a handle on things. [Eaterwire]

BEARD LAND—America's favorite airport chef Wolfgang Puck, restaurant world matriarch Lidia Bastianich, and grape juice lover and cooking nerd Alton Brown will be hosting this year's James Beard Awards on May 3. Last year's exceedingly long awards show was hosted by Julie & Julia's Stanley Tucci, Cat Cora, and Emeril Lagasse. The year before, they experimented with the curious pairing of Kim Cattrall and Bobby Flay. Alton will be a hoot for sure, but we've said it before and we'll say it again: Why don't they just give it to Padma and be done with it? [Eater NY]
