1) North Beach/Chinatown: Currently slated to open next Saturday (10/11) on the corner of Stockton and Vallejo is Loving Hut, a worldwide vegan chain. The website is ridiculous enough to be an afternoon time suck (dishes are "served lovingly, in a graciously decorated, pure and peaceful environment, giving one a heavenly feeling"), but as a Chowhound points out, what we really want to know is how "the fastest growing international vegan fast food chain in the world" managed to slip under Peskin's radar. 2) NoPa: In the Western Addition, a lot of people keep asking about Nopalito, and the delays continue. Work still hasn't really started, though you can make out what might some floorplans. [PRE-PLYWOOD]
3) Pacific Heights: On the other hand, we've got fresh plywood at the second location of Woodhouse Fish Company. As you'll recall, it's in the old Toraya space right across the street from SPQR on Fillmore. The entire interior is in the process of being redone and last we heard, early '09 was the rough ETA. 4) SoMa: There's new signage up in the weird Mission Street retail spaces on the ground floor of the Fifth & Mission parking complex. Just a few doors down from Mel's, Green Papaya is moving in. [PLYWOOD]
5) The Mission: Quoth a tipster regarding Zweibar on the corner of 20th and Folsom and the rise of the neighborhood: "Not too much construction activity in this space as of late, though ... I live in the ‘hood and would rather have a functioning eating/drinking destination than abandoned graffiti magnet. Hell, I'm looking forward to a 20th St. corridor epicurean renaissance, with Mr. Pickles and Los Jarritos holding down the western end, and Zweibar, Flour + Water, and Gratitude leading to stalwarts Atlas and Blowfish. Add the venerable Universal Café, recent opening of Limon Rotisserie and whatever is ultimately going in at 21st and Harrison, and you've got fewer reasons than ever to cross Mission St. for a great meal." 6) Noe Valley: The NV Blog passes along an update (photos there) regarding the unnamed Asian project at 1298 Church Street at 25th: "We spoke to the contractor today and he said it should be open 'by the end of the year.' Possible, but the inside is still bare studs and no one has pulled an electrical permit ... The exterior is nearly buttoned up (complete with paint swatches), and the interior framing looks completed. The plumbing also looks complete."
