Pot Soda Could be Coming to a Dispensary Near You

Think your soda doesn't have enough pop? If you're a medical marijuana user, your bottle of sugar and caffeine is about to get a little extra zing.

One Santa Cruz County resident says he plans to develop and market a soda with THC, one of the prominent ingredients in marijuana.

But Clay Butler tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel that he has no plans to use the product himself. Instead he plans to make it available to medical marijuana dispensaries.

"I don't do drugs," he told the paper. "Never have. I never drank, never smoked. I'm a clean-living guy. I've had two beers in my whole life, and I remember them both too. No marijuana, I've never smoked a cigarette. I take an aspirin when I get a headache. That's it."

Pot soda already exists but Butler says his company's will be different because the commercial artist will put his branding behind the pop.

Canna Cola will come in cola flavor, a lemon-lime flavor, grape and even a Dr Pepper inspired pop called Doc Weed.

Each bottle will have between 35 to 65 milligrams of THC and sell for between $10 and $15 per 12-ounce bottle.

The soda is scheduled to begin selling in Colorado in February but getting the bottles into California may be a bit trickier. Plans tentatively call for the soda to hit the Golden State in the spring.

A bill sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein could also cause problems. The "Brownie Law" would double penalties for anyone who sells a product that combines marijuana and "a candy product."
