You asked us, we asked you, and commenters responded, shedding light on our "Cole Valley Mystery House." Perhaps better known as 1415 Shrader St., the contemporary home is only 9'-10 1/2" wide. No word on the designer, but we did get a little background from a first-hand source who lived in the nabe during construction. The dish: the lot was bought by our mystery architect in the late 80's for "the mid 5 digits" (much more innocent times, clearly), and despite neighborhood protests, the proposed building eventually gained planning approval (again - a simpler time), and construction began sometime the late 90's/early 00's. The resulting home was built with thin, prefab walls and was sold shortly after completion. All that time spent in design and planning and then they barely lived in it? Problems with the design, or just a lone-ranger architect/developer looking to change the city one narrow lot at a time?
