Central Subway Price Tag Surprise

San Francisco's ambitious plan could cost more than expected

Expect the words "boondoggle" and "subway to nowhere" to get bandied about.

The SF Appeal reports that the MTA will pay $147 million to the Central Subway Partnership to manage the construction of its eponymous transit line— that's nearly twice the original estimate.

And now that that little factoid's out of the bag, everyone's wondering MTA bungled their estimates for other parts of the project too. (The total stands at $1.5 billion at the moment.)

Chill out, says MTA spokesman Judson True: "We are doing everything we can to prevent that from happening again." Pinky swear?
