MTA Leaves Barneys With a Foul Smell

Public transportation is more important to San Francisco than fancy basement perfumes.

Tuesday the Board of Supervisors told Barneys as much when they voted to allow the Municipal Transportation Agency to reclaim part of the ritzy store's basement sales area to make room for the Central Subway.

The $1.6 billion project will run from China Basin to Chinatown and right through the Union Square public space the City gave to Barneys three years ago, with a revocable permit.

At least it will be easier for Giants fans to get to their favorite department stores in a few years, assuming a lot of other things go right with the project.
