Free Wi-Fi Arriving at SFO

Travelers waiting to fly will soon be able to surf for free at San Francisco International Airport.

Approval is expected Tuesday on a deal to provide travelers a free wireless Internet connection on smartphones and laptops at the airport.

Travelers can access Wi-Fi now at the airport at a T-Mobile hotspot for fees ranging from $6 for an hour up to $40 for monthly use. With the deal this week. That fee would be canned.

The move, which would still need to be endorsed by the San Francisco City Purchaser, would bring San Francisco in line with its Bay Area competitors. The San Jose and Oakland airports already offer free wireless.

Officials are still trying to figure out how to offset the costs of providing the free service. Some ideas include Wi-Fi related advertising or sponsorship.
