Goodbye, Paper: Amazon Sells More Kindle Books Than Hardcovers

If you're looking for a sign that traditional books might not survive much longer than the CD, here you go: Amazon is officially selling more downloadable ebooks for its Kindle reader than real-deal hardcover books.

And it's not a slim margin, either; for the past three months, Amazon has sold 143 Kindle books for every 100 hardcover books.

With hardcover books costing what now feels like a crazy amount of money for a less portable product, this trend isn't going to turn around anytime soon. More and more Kindles and other ereaders are going to be sold in coming months, and ebook sales figures will soon dwarf hardcover sales.

But don't fret, book lovers! Like vinyl records, hardcover books will always have an audience of enthusiasts. But it looks like their days of being the standard for newly-released books are over.
