Much-Needed Falls in Bay Area

With only two days of rain so far in February, the Bay Area remains way off the mark when it comes to monthly rainfall.

San Jose has only received .11 inches of rain for the entire month; the only two days of rain were on Feb. 7 and 8. The average rain for this month to date is 2.01 inches.  So, Tuesday's rain storm is not considered a major one, any rain is a big deal at this point.

Showered developed during the early morning commute and pockets of rain continued through the afternoon.

With a decent amount of uplift in the atmosphere, there should also be a slight chance of thunderstorms and small hail in the forecast through Tuesday night.  In addition, Tuesday temperatures will also be quite cold. After hitting the 70s last week, most areas will experience upper 40s for daytime highs.

Wednesday should start off very cold - in the 20s and 30s, and may have lingering low bay Area levels of snow to 1,500 to 2,000 feet.  A rain-snow mix may go as low as 1,000 feet over the South & East Bay hills.

California Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed snow on the ground in the Sierra Nevada.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the central and southern Sierra, where some areas could see as much as a foot of snow. A winter weather advisory was in effect further north. Ski resorts around Lake Tahoe could get up to 8 inches of snow.

The cold system from the Gulf of Alaska is also expected to drop snow at much lower elevations before moving out by Wednesday.
