Two Big Ski Resorts Open in Tahoe

Two major Lake Tahoe ski resorts have opened for the season.

Heavenly on Tahoe's south shore and Northstar just to the north of the lake began with limited operations Saturday.

Heavenly had been scheduled to open Friday, but high winds prompted the resort to postpone its opening until Saturday.

Snow-making machines and a storm that dropped up to nearly a foot of snow this week allowed the resorts to open.

Kirkwood is scheduled to open Monday, and Mt. Rose and Squaw Valley plan to open Wednesday.

Opening earlier were Boreal atop Donner Summit and Mammoth Mountain just east of Yosemite National Park.
