Sea Level Snow Possible This Weekend

This is a very unusual forecast.

Seeing snow on the Bay Area mountain tops is becoming old hat this week, but mother nature is about to top that normal show-stopper.

This weekend there is a fairly good chance that we could see snow at sea level, according to forecasters.

The best chance to see the snow falling in cities like San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose is early Saturday morning.

NBC Bay Area meteorologist Christina Loren says the potential for snow is thanks to a cold front that is headed our way from Alaska. It will bring a storm and temperatures that are cold enough to turn rain into snow.

Loren says it all comes down to the timing of the storm, but adds right now conditions look favorable for snow levels to drop to at least 500 feet and snow flurries in Oakland and San Francisco.

Last week the snow levels went below the 2,000 foot level.  You can see a lot of those photos by clicking on the image gallery inside this story.  This weekend, just about everyone could add to the photo fun.

Getting snow in San Francisco is not unprecedented, but it is unusual. The San Francisco Chronicle posted historical photos of a very white Marin County in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can see more of those photos here. The paper says the last time there was measurable snow in the City was 1976. There were snow flurries just a couple years ago, but they didn't stick.
