Weather Explainer: What is a Halo?

An NBC Bay Area viewer sent a message asking about the weather phenomenon shown in the photo above.

NBC Bay Area Chief Meteorologist Jeff Ranieri explained the phenomenon it's known as a halo.

"Light refracts off ice crystals present in a layer of cirrus clouds," Ranieri explained. "The halo is usually seen as a bright, white ring although sometimes it can have color."
