$1.1 Million Mural for San Jose Airport Approved

Plans to install a $1.1 million mural at Mineta San Jose International Airport are moving forward.

The San Jose City Council Tuesday unanimously approved the proposal, which could create the city's largest piece of public art.

The mural -- expected to be more than 76,000-square-feet and stand about 62 feet tall -- is supposed to cover part of the airport's new rental car garage.

Airport officials say the idea for the art piece is a high resolution photograph of waving human hands in different gestures.

It is expected to be developed from an actual photograph of San Jose residents.

Officials say the image will be laid over metal mesh. Assembly could begin in the spring.

The city's arts commission has final say over the design.
