Visitors Finally Meet Baby Elephant Ajabu

The Dallas Zoo is celebrating the debut of a new arrival. Visitors finally got a peek at the zoo’s new baby elephant. Baby Ajabu (uh-jah’-boo) and his mom cautiously stepped out to greet the crowds on Wednesday morning. His mother, Mlilo, gave birth back in May after being rescued from Swaziland. At 332 pounds, Ajabu is actually on the small size for an elephant his age. Officials at the Dallas Zoo allowed him to bond with his mother for several months while they “baby-proofed” the habitat, which was originally designed for adult elephants. Zoo staff have taken extra steps to ensure the baby elephant’s safety. The baby’s first line of defense is his mom. She’s sticking close and making sure he doesn’t get too out of control.
