Hiker Rescued Near Tahoe After Trying to Save Dog

A 27-year-old woman near South Lake Tahoe on Sunday fell about 30 feet after trying to save her dog, who had slipped on the mountainside. California Highway Patrol rescuers said the woman is lucky to be alive. Rescuers say if you find yourself in a similar situation, you can use a compass app on your phone. It helps you identify the latitude and longitude so you can give that information to rescuers. They also caution people that the wet winter has washed out a lot of familiar trails and left unstable debris behind.
