Over 500,000 PG&E Customers Avoid Rotating Outages in California

More than 525,000 PG&E customers were alerted that their power could go out Wednesday evening, as extreme heat continues across California

NBC Universal, Inc. The Bay Area is under an excessive heat warning until Thursday evening and once again, being warned of potential power problems. NBC Bay Area’s Raj Mathai spoke to Chief Meteorologist Jeff Ranieri for some insight.

Hundreds of thousands of PG&E customers avoided rolling blackouts Wednesday thanks to the conservation of energy by Californians.

More than 525,000 PG&E customers were alerted that their power could go out Wednesday evening, as extreme heat continues across California.

In the Bay Area, heat-related issues with equipment had already downed electricity to about 20,300 PG&E customers in the South Bay, and another 5,100 around the region at around 5 p.m., according to PG&E.

The California Independent System Operator directed the state's utilities to prepare for rotating power outages but thanks to the public, those were avoided.

As of 5:15 p.m., the ISO website showed capacity at 56,737 megawatts and demand at 49,585 megawatts.

"However, out of an abundance of caution, PG&E has given advanced notification to approximately 525,277 customers to prepare for potential rotating outages this evening in case they need to take place," PG&E said in a news release.

California ISO asked residents to conserve power during Wednesday’s Flex Alert from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
