A man who died in a solo crash on westbound Interstate Highway 80 in Pinole early Wednesday morning has been identified as 59-year-old El Sobrante resident Dexter Francis, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office.
The California Highway Patrol was notified of a rollover crash on westbound Highway 80 near Pinole Valley Road around 1:10 a.m.
Arriving crews extricated Francis from the vehicle and tried to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP investigators say he was headed west at a high rate of speed when he veered off the roadway, struck a concrete sound wall and flipped his Audi, which came to rest blocking two lanes of traffic.
All lanes of traffic had reopened around 3 a.m., according to the CHP.
