A husband and wife were arrested after the man barricaded himself, the woman and their two small children inside a home in unincorporated Hayward for several hours, a sheriff's sergeant said.
Adrian Shum, 26, was arrested following the incident, which began at 5:11 a.m. when his mother-in-law called from a home on Jamie Way and said he was acting strangely. Sheriff's deputies responded to the home, but Shum refused to come out, Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.
The mother-in-law also lived at the home, which she owned, Nelson said.
At about 10:30 a.m., Shum went into another room of the home, giving authorities the opening to enter the home and try to arrest him, Nelson said. Shum resisted and was shot with a Taser gun before being detained, he said.
His wife, Ann Shum, was also arrested after she started to interfere with the arrest of her husband, according to Nelson.
The two children, both toddlers, were not harmed, and were released to the custody of their grandparents, Nelson said. Child Protective Services officials were notified and are also investigating the incident, he said.
