The freeze warning will go into effect at midnight and end at 8 a.m. Monday, according to the NWS.
As holiday shoppers Sunday evening braved temperatures in the mid- to upper 40s at Santana Row, on the other side of San Jose, 40 men tried to get out of the cold at City Team Ministry men’s shelter.
"If we didn’t have this, people would die," said Michael Middleton. "This place shows our city cares."
Middleton, 33, was born and raised in San Jose, and is trained in auto body repair. He hopes to have his own place six months from now.
"I was homeless, and to survive these nights, you have to draw your arms in like a caterpillar and find a nook," he said.

The recent string of cold weather has coated portions of the Bay Area in sheets of ice and frost, which have caused headaches and at times injuries on the roadways.
In the East Bay on Sunday morning, ice on Highway 37 near Columbus Parkway caused a driver to lose control and crash. The California Highway Patrol reported that the driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo.
Another ice-related accident near Marina Vista Road and Highway 4 in Martinez caused a pickup to flip onto its roof. Investigators said the driver walked away unscathed.
Aside from bundling up and staying cozy indoors, people are reminded to protect their plants and animals as freezing temperatures can be deadly.
