Bay Area Fetus Find Deemed “Medical Waste”

A human fetus that was found inside a bottle on Brooks Island in Richmond Wednesday appeared to be a laboratory specimen, according to Sgt. Bryan Reynolds with the Contra Costa County coroner's office.

Marine biologists studying birds on the island discovered the small bottle and reported the finding to police, Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan said last week.

Police collected the bottle, which was about 4 inches tall and 2 inches wide on either side, and brought it to the coroner's office.

A forensic pathologist examined it and determined that it was human and that it had gestated for about 2 months. It had been kept in  some kind of a preservative inside the bottle and was not decomposed.

There were no markings on the bottle that could suggest where the specimen came from.

The finding is no longer under investigation and the specimen will be disposed of as medical waste, Reynolds said.
