Beachgoers Warned of Sneaker Waves

After a strong start to Winter in December, January has had little to no rainfall. The latest pattern will continue that trend with very unusual warming expected the next 2 days. Details on who could hit 70 degrees & when our next chance of rain may arrive in the 7 day forecast.

Bay Area beachgoers this weekend are advised to use extra caution, as large, powerful waves known as "sneaker waves" are expected throughout the region's coastal areas, according to the National Weather Service.

A hazardous wave advisory is in effect on beaches from Monterey Bay to Point Reyes through Sunday morning, according to a weather service advisory.

Boaters, swimmers and surfers should expect dangerous conditions near sandbars and people on the beach should be aware that there may be "sneaker waves," or large waves, powerful waves that can knock people down.

People can avoid being caught in a sneaker wave by staying attentive and never turning their back to the ocean.

Anyone who is caught in a rip current is advised to swim parallel to the current until they are away from its pull before swimming back to shore.

U.S. Coast Guard officials Friday reminded people to resist the urge to attempt to save people or pets swept out to sea, since that usually leads to the prospective rescuer's death.

Instead, people are urged to call 911 immediately and follow the person or animal along the shore until help arrives.
