Berkeley’s tax on soda is raking in the funds, as predicted.

Back in November, Berkeley became the first city in the nation to adopt a soda tax. Monday, the city announced that in its first month, which was March, the tax brought in $116,000.

At this rate, the tax is on track to provide an extra $1.2 million a year to Berkeley health programs and schools.

The one-penny-per-ounce tax is charged when retailers receive sweetened drinks to sell. It’s up to stores to decide whether to eat the cost or pass it on to customers.
