Beyoncé Returns to Levi's Stadium for ‘Formation' World Tour

Monday's concert will mark the pop superstar’s return to Levi’s since her controversial Super Bowl performance, where her backup dancers held up a “Justice 4 Mario Woods” sign during the halftime show

You know it’s going to be a big deal when Caltrain adds a special service for a concert — in this case Beyoncé’s “Formation” World Tour which closed down streets in the South Bay, and will pack 50,000 people into Levi’s Stadium tonight.

This will be Beyoncé‘s first of two shows at Levi’s — a second show was added for Sept. 17 due to high demand — and will mark the pop superstar’s return to Levi’s since her controversial Super Bowl performance, where her backup dancers held up a “Justice 4 Mario Woods” sign during the halftime show to protest against police brutality.[[379737271, C]]

Her dancers wore black leather berets and Afro hairstyles reminiscent of the 1960s Black Power movement. At one point during the performance the backup dancers and Beyoncé gave a salute, and formed an X formation which many took as a reference to Malcom X.

The video for "Formation" is meant to be provocative, with images of Hurricane Katrina, young black boys dancing in front of police and references to African-American history. During Super Bowl, Beyoncé stayed at a $10,000 weekend Airbnb hideout in the Los Altos Hills. No word on where she's staying this time around.

The 34-year-old singer’s two-hour performance at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena over the weekend received rave reviews, with critics describing it as the “most spontaneous and compelling” in recent memory. She performed numbers form her chart-topping new album “Lemonade,” an emotional look into a woman’s struggles with her husband’s infidelity.

“Beyoncé’s stockings were snagged, her feet bare, her makeup smeared. Even the singer’s hair, normally blown out into a golden halo by electric fans placed strategically around the stage, lay flat and soggy against her face as she belted out “Freedom” from the Rose Bowl stage,” wrote LA Times music critic Lorraine Ali. “It was a clear deviation from the precision and perfection inherent in nearly every performance and public appearance by the singer.”

Beyoncé also paid a tribute to Prince, singing “The Beautiful Ones.” The audience sang to “Purple Rain” as she left the stage.

Tickets to both the Santa Clara concerts are such a hot commodity that there have been a slew of reports of people selling fake tickets. If you're still trying to nab a seat, here’s how you can avoid counterfeits. Promoted by Live Nation, the “Formation” Rose Bowl tour drew a slew of celebrities, including Bradley Cooper, Kobe Bryant, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis and Hillary Duff, who was spotted on another fan’s shoulders dancing to “Crazy in Love.”

As for the Monday night commute home, it’s not going to be an easy one.

Tasman Drive is closed in front of the stadium and police checkpoints are in place at several neighborhood access points to limit access. The parking lot at Levi’s will open at 4 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. event.

For more information on parking and what’s allowed inside the stadium Monday, check out the Levi's Stadium website.
