1 Detained in Connection to Brush Fires Near Hwy. 4 in Bay Point

Several fires broke out along Highway 4 in Contra Costa County Tuesday. Police have one person in custody in connection to the fires which started burning in Bay Point near Willow Pass Road. NBC By Area’s SkyRanger was overhead as fire crews put out the flames which are now under control. The Contra Costa Fire Department said these are the first significant fires of the season, and an indicator of dangerous conditions.

Several brush fires were reported near Highway 4 in Contra Costa County Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officials say the fires began at Willow Pass Road in Bay Point and investigators confirm a suspect has been detained in connection to the fires.

"These are the first significant fires of the season & an indicator of dangerous conditions," Contra Costa Fire officials said. "Please use caution in the area & in all outdoor activities."

Contra Costa County fire officials said the fires were extinguished just after 5 p.m. and said the suspect in custody is "expected to be charged with 2 counts of arson."

"Now is the time to begin preparing for an early wildfire season safety."
