Fairfield: Man Intentionally Drowns Dog in Pond

A 21-year-old man was arrested Monday after he was seen drowning a dog at a Fairfield pond, police said.

Officials said Bryan Cavanah admitted to drowning the dog and told police he did not know why he did it. The dog, described as a brown female pit bull terrier, belonged to his father.

Police received several calls at 10:15 a.m. reporting a man drowning a dog in the Civic Center pond at 1000 Kentucky Street.

The incident was witnessed by numerous people in the surrounding city hall and civic center area, police said.

Police said Cavanah repeatedly pushed the dog under water until it failed to surface. The remains of the dog were recovered by officers who entered the pond using a small boat, police said.

Cavanah was arrested for felony cruelty to an animal and violation of probation -- he was on probation through Solano County for assault with a deadly weapon. Cavanah was booked into Solano County jail and is being held without bail.
