Family of Woman Killed by Sheriff's Deputy in Half Moon Bay to File Lawsuit

The family of an 18-year-old woman shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in Half Moon Bay said it plans to file a lawsuit Monday against the deputy and San Mateo County.

Yanira Serrano-Garcia's family said they called 911 on June 3 when the mentally ill woman armed herself with a knife and refused to take her medication.

The sheriff's department said Deputy Menh Trieu shot and killed Seranno-Garcia when she lunged at him with the knife.

The lawsuit will allege the shooting was unconstitutional in that it violated the Fourth Amendment’s limits on police authority.
