Haight-Ashbury Homeless Shelter Closing

After 12 years of helping youngsters in need, a homeless center in the Haight-Ashbury area is closing.

Despite fundraising efforts and a petition, the Homeless Youth Alliance is shutting its doors. They say their landlord decided not to renew the lease in October and gave them 60 days.

Officials are now looking for a new place to set up the shelter.

“We’ve been in this building for 12 years, and it’s possibly the most stable and consistent thing in many of the lives of the kids who come through here,” outreach coordinator Jennifer Cowles said. “And so losing this is just another thing that’s being taken away.”

The shelter provides food, needle exchange, a safe place and showers.
