A man died after falling overboard from a container ship near the Bay Bridge this morning, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The man fell from Ever Elite, a 900-foot vessel that was traveling inbound to the Oakland Outer Harbor just after 5 a.m., Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Jeremy Pichette said.
The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot response boat, while the pilot vessel Golden Gate and three nearby tugboats also responded, Pichette said.
The pilot vessel found the man two feet underwater. He was not wearing a life vest, Pichette said.
The man was taken to San Francisco where he was pronounced dead. Coast Guard officials are investigating the incident.
