Six people were taken to the hospital Monday morning after a dump truck plowed through a Santa Rosa intersection, triggering a fiery crash involving 10 vehicles, according to officials.
Two of the six people transported to the hospital suffered serious injuries in the crash that occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the area of Fountain Grove Parkway and Mendocino Avenue, according to officials. Six vehicles were burned.
Larry Broderick witnessed the accident unfold when he drove through the intersection of Mendocino Avenue and Fountaingrove Parkway. Broderick said he saw a runaway dump truck filled with fire debris slam into a pickup truck before colliding with a half-dozen cars that burst into flames.
"It was like bombs going off," Broderick said.
Broderick and others in the area sprung into action to help save a family trapped in a minivan.
A multi-vehicle collision has shut down streets in the area of Mendocino Avenue and Fountaingrove Parkway in north Santa Rosa this morning, a dispatcher with the REDCOM Sonoma County Fire and Emergency Dispatch Center said.
The crash and subsequent investigation prompted a host of road closures:
Northbound Mendocino Avenue at Bicentennial Way
Southbound Old Redwood Highway at the Mendocino off-ramp
Mendocino Avenue overcrossing at Cleveland Avenue
Westbound Fountaingrove Parkway at Round Barn Boulevard
