Ode to the Stinking Rose

Breath mints for everyone

33 years and still pungent! The garlic capital of the world is throwing its annual party. Thousands of people are flocking to Gilroy and thousands of dollars are flocking to charity. NBC Bay Area’s George Kiriyama explains.

It's that time of year again, when garlic rules in the South Bay.

The yearly festival that celebrates the stinking rose has already brought tens of thousands to Christmas Hill Park for the world-famous Gilroy Garlic Festival which kicked off Friday.

Sunday is last call.

From gourmet alley to the famous fire-flash (or flame up) garlic cook-off and all the food booths in between, it's Gilroy's signature event.

This is the 33rd year of the festival.  Tickets start at $15.

Even if you aren't going to the festival, you should at  least be aware it if you are traveling anywhere on Highway 101 in the South Bay. Traffic has been jammed from Prunedale to San Jose as festival goers make their way to Christmas Hill Park.
